One of the loveliest cities in
England and on every tourist's itinerary, Chester ranks alongside London,
York and Edinburgh for culture and historic interest.
Built by the Romans some 2,000
years ago, Chester has retained much of the original Roman street plan. In
addition the country's largest complete circuit of surviving defensive
walls surrounds the city.
Chester reflects many ages.
The picturesque old city boasts a Roman amphitheatre, surrounding walls
and street plan. there is many medieval half-timbered
buildings , unique two-tiered, covered Rows
which many consider to be the most distinctive architectural feature in
Chester.
The
Rows are also home to some of the best shops in the city. Several of the shops at street level on the Rows have
medieval stone cellars or crypts. Although some of them have been
radically altered, a few remain and are worth a visit.
Chester also has ancient churches,
a 900-year-old
cathedral
and tranquil riverside. For horse lovers, Chester also boasts a famous
racecourse, where the North West's rich and famous
gather to show off.
Chester is
home to a fantastic zoo and the Spirit
of the Jaguar is just one of many reasons to visit Chester Zoo. It was
officially opened in September 2001, by famous actress and conservationist
Stephanie Powers to highlight some of the problems these magnificent cats
face in our modern world. Chester Zoo has three Jaguars - Ebony, Salvador
