Football in the NorthWest

The North West has always been historically linked with football and since the inception of the Premiership, been home to many of the constituent teams. Whilst the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool have developed as world brand names following European success in the last 30 years, other North West teams have built considerable reputations.

With the development of football as a business and not just a game, Premiership teams are becoming public listed companies on the stock exchange and corporate sponsors from around the globe are prying for a piece of the action.

Football in the North West

Below is a summary of the each North West Premier Team's history. To view the official site for each club, please click on the club name.

Manchester United

Manchester United Football Club was first formed in 1878, albeit under a different name - Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway). The Football League was formed in 1888, but Newton Heath waited until 1892 to make their entrance.

After several name changes including Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic, Manchester United was born in April/May 1902.

Liverpool

If it wasn't for one man, Liverpool Football Club would never have been born. When Everton left Anfield in a dispute over rent in 1892, club chairman John Houlding stayed behind along with a handful of supporters and just three first-team players. But he was determined to see football continue at the ground. He formed a new club from scratch, chose the name Liverpool and created a legend.

Everton

Everton, Merseyside’s first Football Club has been at the forefront of the beautiful game in England during its 125 years in existence. A founder member of the Football League in 1888 and the first club to lift the league championship trophy in 1891, Everton established a tradition of achievement which has been vigorously maintained throughout the years.

Bolton

The club’s first game was played on a field called Smithfield and their first opponents were Farnworth. Matches were played on the Recreation Ground with Christ Church School itself being used as headquarters. the Vicar objected to meetings being held within the school without his presence, and the fact that they had to wander to a nearby hostelry, the Gladstone Hotel, which itself suggested the new name “Bolton Wanderers”. Thus on 28 August 1877 the club was formed.

Blackburn Rovers

The Blackburn Rovers club was formed in 1875 following a meeting on November 5th in the St. Leger Hotel on King William Street. The meeting was organised by two old boys of Shrewsbury school, John Lewis and Arthur Constantine. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of forming a football club to play under Association rules.

Manchester City

The club is formed as 'West Gorton St Marks'  in 1880. In 1887 the name changed to Ardwick FC. The club relocated to Hyde Road in 1894, and the Club became a limited company and changed name finally to Manchester City FC in 1904. The team then went on to win the FA Cup for first time, beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0. Also finished runners-up in the League Championship that year.

If you are a football lover than why not visit the home of the Football League at the National Football Museum. Preston North End Football Club were founder members of the Football League.
