The
Royal and Ancient Golf Club has announced that Royal Liverpool Golf Club (Hoylake)
will once again play host to the Open Championship from 20th to 23rd
July 2006.
The Open is no stranger to Hoylake, and was last held here in 1967. In the
years since that historic championship, the modern logistical demands that
the Open places upon the host course has meant that the Royal Liverpool
was ruled out as an Open venue.

Now,
however, with plans in place as a result of an agreement
between The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, Royal Liverpool Golf Club and the Metropolitan
Borough of Wirral, the Open will make a long-overdue return.
The agreement was necessary to ensure success in hosting the Open and
covers areas of mutual responsibility such as accessibility to the venue,
travel infrastructure, accommodation, traffic and resulting congestion,
car parking, and spectator
access.
One
essential element in ensuring the Open's return to Wirral was the club's
purchase of an additional 10 acres of land adjacent to the course plus the
commitment to build a new practice ground close by, on the municipal
course owned by Wirral Council. A move seen to not just help the Open
but put something back into the community in the hope of encouraging new
talent to emerge.

Royal
Liverpool Golf Club has a long and distinguished history. It was founded
in 1869 and has hosted the Open a respectable ten times. A round up
