It is expected that millions more visitors will pour
into Liverpool to explore its magnificent cultural heritage in the lead-up
to 2008. Culture and the Arts have always been important to the city.
Liverpool's
musical impact on the world has been unique and unquestionable; its
writers, actors and artists have been pre-eminent. Liverpool's sporting
achievements are also numerous and it's architecture second only to
London.
Liverpool - Truly the World in one city
Receiving European Capital of Culture 2008 status
has benefited Liverpool; and will continue to develop this great city
further. Below are just some of benefits the 2008 Capital of Culture status
has brought, some of the projects completed in Liverpool or those still in
development:
-
Creation
of 14,000 new jobs
-
Liverpool is growing at a faster pace than any other British
city and there are now 8.9% more businesses on Merseyside than two
years ago.
-
An extra 1.7 million tourists - The
"rocket fuel" of Liverpool's Capital of Culture win has
brought about a major increase in hotel bookings and investment
inquiries to the region.
-
Almost 700,000 hotel rooms were sold on Merseyside in 2003/04,
more than 96,000 up on the previous year and still growing.
-
Away from tourism, the economic picture was also fairly bright
with inquiries from companies eager to invest in the city region
rising from 13 a month to 20.
-
Encourage £2 billion investment
-
Liverpool City Council has agreed
a £250,000 increase in funding to the city's Playhouse and Everyman
Theatres.
-
There is plans to build a £12 million Olympic size swimming pool in
Liverpool. A proposal to build the 50 metre facility will mean Liverpool
will house one of just a handful of Olympic size pools in the U.K.
-
The vital conference market
has also benefited well, with the
number of conferences, (of more than 100 delegates) jumping from 45
to 60 and the value of conference business more than doubling from
less than £350,000 to almost £800,000.
-
According to the Halifax, the average house price in Liverpool
rose from £103,224 to £125,077 (21.2%) in the nine months
following the city's Capital of Culture win.
